    Insurance & Reimbursement in Quebec

Most group insurance plans in Quebec cover the services of a registered dietitian, but coverage varies by employer. Here's how to check yours.

How to Check Your Coverage: 3 Steps

    1

Log into your insurer's portal or call the number on the back of your card.

    2

Ask: "Do I have coverage for a dietitian-nutritionist (Dt.P.)?" Some portals list "dietitian" and "nutritionist" as separate categories.

    3

Note down three numbers: the per-visit maximum, the annual maximum, and whether it renews on a calendar year or the plan's anniversary date.

This is true regardless of the insurer.

Group insurance coverage for dietitian-nutritionist services has increased significantly in Canada. It now covers the majority of group plans, compared to only 20 to 30% a decade ago.

Sun Life, Manulife, Green Shield, Canada Life, and Beneva all offer this coverage as a standard paramedical option, but none include it automatically. Coverage typically works on a per-visit maximum (often $50 to $80) plus an annual maximum (often $300 to $750), rather than a fixed percentage.
