    Introduction to Solids

    Child Eating Bagel

Getting ready to introduce solids and not sure where to start? I support Montreal-area parents through this stage, from assessing your baby's readiness to building toward family meals, with an approach grounded in the latest evidence.

    Who is this counselling for?
Parents of babies approaching introduction to solids, typically around 6 months.

Why nutrition matters so much from the start

The way a baby discovers food can have a lasting influence. A recent study showed that children fed using strict baby-led weaning (BLW) had a significantly lower risk of food selectivity between the ages of 2 and 5, compared to those traditionally spoon-fed—a relationship that held true across several sensitivity analyses. The timing of texture introduction also matters: children introduced to lumpy foods after 9 months tended to be pickier and eat fewer different types of food by age 7.

A new home for this chapter on feeding your baby

Nuome comes from "nu," meaning new, and "home." That's exactly what this stage deserves: a consistent resource, right from the first bites, rather than advice found here and there. The same file that started with you before pregnancy accompanies you during the introduction of solids and continues through food selectivity, allergies, and the family meals that follow. You don't start from scratch with each new stage; we're there from the very beginning.

    What that includes

    • Assessing baby's readiness to start solids

    • Purées or baby-led weaning (BLW): choose the approach that suits your family, or combine the two.

    • Sequence for introducing allergens based on current evidence

    • Gradual transition to family meals

What to expect during a consultation

    • Short pre-visit questionnaire (already in your file if you are a Nuome client)

    • Initial 60-minute assessment: preparing baby, questions, concrete plan

    • Followed according to your baby's rhythm

    Scope of practice

I do not diagnose feeding disorders, growth delays, or swallowing/motor difficulties. These situations are referred to a pediatrician or a team specializing in feeding disorders (speech therapist/occupational therapist).

    FAQ

At what age should I start solids? Most babies are ready around 6 months, but preparation depends on specific developmental signs, not just age. I will assess these signs with you at the first visit. If there is a particular medical factor (prematurity, reflux, growth delay), I will work in collaboration with the pediatric team.

Purees or baby-led weaning: do I have to choose? No. The two approaches can be combined depending on what works best for your family; I'll help you find the right balance.

How can allergens be introduced safely? There is a sequence and a pace recommended by current evidence, and this is one of the main focuses of our sessions.

Do I need individual follow-up, or can I just read online resources? General resources are helpful, but individual follow-up allows recommendations to be tailored to your baby's specific history and needs, something a generic resource can't offer.
